Forklift Safety Cage FAQs

What is a forklift safety cage?

Forklift safety cages are a secure, steel platform attached to a forklift designed to safely lift personally to conduct tasks at height, such as stocktaking or maintenance. These cages must comply with the Australian Standard AS2359.17 and show a design load certification plate affixed to the rear headboard guard on the cage.

Safety cages attach directly to the forklift’s tynes. They are locked on with safety chains and pins and have fencing and self-closing gates to prevent falls from heights.

Common forklift safety cages include safety cages with mesh sides, safety cages with rail sides, and order picking cages.

To secure a forklift safety cage insert the forklift forks fully into the pockets, and secure them with locking pins and chains behind the heel of the forklift. Workers should be secured with a safety harness with lanyard, attached to designated anchor points. Maximum of 2 persons allowed in a forklift safety cage under AS2359.17 part 2.

A forklift safety cage reduces the load capacity of a forklift, because it shifts the load centre and de-rates the capacity because the weight itself and distance from the front wheels (load centre) act as a permanent load.

  • The forklift operator must be a licenced operator in the use of a forklift. This would have had them trained in the safe operation of a forklift safety cage attachment as they are responsible for the personnel within the cage.
  • Before using a forklift safety cage, it’s important to ensure that the WLL matches the load weight and that the safety pins are secure.
  • During the operation of a forklift safety cage attachment, always work on a hard, level surface, operate the forklift slowly so the load doesn’t swing, and ensure that your load remains in the rated capacity.
