When to use a forklift work platform
Forklift safety cages are intended for short-duration tasks at height where it isn’t practical to use a scaffold or an elevating work platform. Typical applications include:
- Warehouse and plant maintenance — lights, sprinklers, ducting, racking repairs
- Stock retrieval from high racking
- Building and equipment inspections
- Signage, shelving and fit-out work
- Any occasional access task where bringing in an EWP isn’t justified
They are not intended as a substitute for an EWP or scaffold on continuous or long-duration work.
Australian made and certified
Every Bremco forklift safety cage is designed, welded, tested and plated in our own Rocklea workshop — not imported. Each unit leaves us with a compliance plate and serial number, fully welded in accordance with AS2359.1, and backed by our 12-month structural warranty and money-back guarantee.
Imported cages often quote higher load capacities. What matters is whether that capacity is rated, plated and traceable to a standard your safety auditor will accept — ours is.
Custom manufacturing
Need a different size, capacity, gate position or finish? Bremco custom manufactures forklift safety cages and work platforms to suit your forklift, your task and your site.
Send us your forklift make, model and capacity with your quote request and we’ll confirm the right cage, then reply with pricing and lead time — usually the same business day. No obligation.
Rail sides or mesh sides — which should you choose?
Both cages share the same base structure, tub, gate and certification. The difference is the sides:
| BMP001-R (rail sides) | BMP001 (mesh sides) | |
|---|---|---|
| Sides | Steel rails | Mesh infill panels |
| Rated capacity | 250 kg or 2 people | 250 kg or 2 people |
| Contains small dropped items | Less enclosed | More enclosed |
| Visibility from inside | Better | Good |
| Weight | Lighter | Heavier |
| Cost | More cost-effective | Higher |
| Best for | General maintenance and access where tools stay in hand or in a belt | Work with small parts, fasteners or tools that could fall through rails |
Both models include a self-closing gate, a removable rear headboard with mesh infill panels, and a fixed harness attachment point. View the mesh-sided BMP001.
Two finishes — powder coated or galvanised
| BMP001-R | BMP001-RG | |
|---|---|---|
| Finish | Fully powder coated safety yellow | DuraGal galvanised |
| Best for | Indoor warehouse and covered use | Outdoor, wash-down, coastal and humid sites |
| Corrosion resistance | Standard | Enhanced |
| High-visibility | Safety yellow | Galvanised finish |
Choose the powder coated BMP001-R for indoor warehouse work, or the DuraGal BMP001-RG where the cage lives outside or is exposed to moisture and salt air.
Is your forklift suitable?
Before fitting any work platform, check that your forklift is rated for it. Under the AS2359 series:
- A counterbalance forklift needs a capacity of at least {{VERIFY: 1,800 kg at 600 mm load centre at maximum lift height, or five times the combined mass of the platform and its rated load — whichever is greater}}
- Your forklift must have enough rated capacity to be used with a work platform. AS2359 sets minimum capacity requirements, and they differ between counterbalance forklifts and reach or straddle trucks. The requirement is also linked to the combined weight of the platform and its rated load, so it varies with the cage you fit. Check your forklift’s data plate, and confirm the requirement for your truck with your forklift supplier or a competent person.
- The operator must hold a current high-risk work licence, remain at the controls, and keep the forklift parked and stabilised while anyone is elevated
- A trial lift should be carried out before anyone enters the cage
li>The forklift must carry a data plate noting that it has been tested for work platform use, including the serial number of the work platform
Not sure whether your forklift qualifies? Send us the make, model and capacity with your quote request and we’ll help you check.
This is general guidance only. Confirm your specific setup with a competent person and refer to AS2359.
