Crane Man Cage FAQs

What is a Crane Man Cage?

A crane man cage (sometimes called a man box) is a metal cage lifted by a crane to safely carry workers and their tools to high and hard to reach locations. It is commonly used when elevated platforms or scaffolding are not available or practical.

Crane man cages are attached to a crane’s hook by multi-leg slings. They must be built with self-closing doors, sides at least one metre in height, and internal handrails. Workers must wear a safety harness and lanyard that is clipped into internal connection points.

 

Common types of crane man cages include crane cages without roofs, crane man cages with roofs, round man cages, and crane first aid rescue cages.

A crane man cage allows workers, their tools and equipment to be transported safely around worksites, which can dramatically improve the efficiency of your team.

A crane man cage is attached to a crane by connecting the multi-leg lifting sling to the designated lifting lugs using rated shackles. An independent secondary safety connection must also be secured.

A crane man cage lowers a crane’s lifting limit because of 3 factors: the cage tare weight, strict safety margins, and the Working Load Limit (WLL). In Australia, crane man cages must also pass stability testing in the design and proof load test phases.

In Australia, crane lifting cages must comply with Australian Standard AS1418.17 for crane lifting devices. All man cages must also have a certified design registration.

Key safety considerations when using a man cage include:

  • Verified that the safety cage has data compliance plates attached that include the load limit, tare weight and registration, and that it includes inward-opening self-closing gates and guardrails.
  • Crane man cages must be supplied with permanently fixed chain slings as part of the manufacturing and testing process.
  • Always conduct thorough pre-usage inspections, including a visual inspection to identify any deformities, cracks, or other damage before use.
  • Ensure the man cage is correctly attached to the crane rigging system.
  • Conduct a trial lift to verify load balance and stability before lifting the cage.
  • Never exceed the crane’s rated capacity or safe percentage limits.
  • Maintain clear communication between the crane operator and crane cage occupants
  • Ensure all occupants of the crane man cage wear a hard hat and a full body harness that is secured to the designated anchor points inside the cage.
