What is a Crane Lifting Beam?

A crane beam, often referred to as a lifting beam, is a crane attachment hung directly from a crane’s main hook to assist in lifting heavy, large, or awkward loads.

Crane beams allow a crane hook to pick an object from multiple points, spreading the weight and preventing long loads from bending and slipping. Crane beams also improve overall safety and balance.

Common types of crane beams include crane lifting beams that have a central lift point where the crane hook attaches. Crane spreader beams have a triangular shape, with chains and slings to connect to the end attachment points of the beam.

To attach a load to a crane spreader beam, first connect vertical slings (chains or wire rope) and shackles from the beam’s lower lugs directly to the beam’s lifting points. Ensure that the load is perfectly balanced directly over the load’s centre of gravity.

To attach a crane lifting beam, connect the rigging slings and shackles to the lifting beam’s lower lugs. Once attached, align the crane hook directly over the load’s centre of gravity and conduct a trial lift to ensure the load is balanced.

A crane beam directly affects a crane’s load capacity as it dictates the maximum rated capacity through dictating structural strength, span distance, and load deflection.

In Australia, crane beams must comply with Australian Standard AS4991 for lifting devices.

There are a number of safety considerations when using a crane beam:

  • Ensure the total weight of the load does not exceed the Working Load Limit (WLL) of the lifting beam, slings, and shackles.
  • Ensure the slings or chains are secured to the load’s designated lifting points.
  • Connect the free end of the slings to the designated lower lugs on the crane beam.
  • Identify the centre of gravity: The main top bail of the lifting beam must be located directly over the load’s centre of gravity. This prevents shifting or dangerous lifting.
  • Conduct a trial lift (just off the ground) to confirm that the load is completely stable and level.
