Crane cages are a specialised type of crane lifting attachment. Typically taking the shape of a basket or bucket, crane cages are an affordable, versatile and practical solution for a range of materials handling applications.
Crane cages can be used to lift most types of loose goods, materials and other components. Typically, crane cages are designed to suit the exact material you’re lifting. This maximises the efficiency of each lift, protects goods from damage and reduces the need for manual handling when loading and unloading. Crane cages are particularly useful for lifting large and awkward goods that would be difficult to manage on their own.

Crane lifting cages work by attaching securely to a crane’s overhead hook using heavy-duty steel chains or slings. Crane cages provide an enclosed, stable platform to safely lift workers or materials.

Brick crane cages are designed to lift standard pallets of bricks and other loose materials like stones, timber and tiles. Brick cages make it simple to lift heavy goods on large sites and for high rise construction projects.

Common types of crane lifting attachments include brick cages, crane pallet bins, good cages, and tool cages (or site boxes).

To attach a crane lifting cage to a crane, you must use a certified multi-leg sling and connect it the designated crane cage lifting lug using shackles or hammerlocks. The main sling ring then needs to be secured directly to the crane safety hook. Some cages, dependent on the load and size, may also require a spreader beam.

To safely attach a load to your crane lifting cage, it’s important to balance the weight, secure items with straps rated for the load if required, and connect the cage securely to the crane hook.

A crane lifting cage adds permanent dead weight to the crane hook, reducing the crane’s net load capacity. Under the Australian Standard, each cage must be tested individually under rigorous proof load testing regime.

In Australia, crane lifting cages must comply with Australian Standard AS4991-2004 for crane lifting devices.

Key safety considerations when using a crane lifting cage include:

  • Ensure the Working Load Limit (WLL), data plate and TARE mass are clearly displayed
  • Conduct a rigorous pre-lift inspection, including all rigging, ground stability and hazard recognition.
  • Ensure there is reliable communication between the crane operator and workers.
  • Conduct a trial lift just above the ground to verify load stability, balance, and rigging security.
