Forklift Goods Cage FAQs

What is a forklift goods cage?

A forklift goods cage is heavy duty, enclosed cage attachment that slides onto the tynes of a forklift to safely lift and transport loose, bulky or palletised goods.

A forklift goods cage is designed to transport materials and cannot be used to lift people. A forklift safety cage is specifically designed to safely lift personnel to perform temporary tasks at height.

Forklift goods cages are heavy-duty cage attachments that slip onto a forklift’s tynes. They are designed to transport stock, equipment, and loose or bulky materials.

Common types of forklift goods cages include standard goods cages, pallet and stillage cages, and mesh cages.

To secure a forklift goods cage you need to use the primary locking mechanism (heel pins) and secondary safety chains.

A forklift goods cage significantly reduces a forklift’s load capacity because the load centre moves further away from the mast.

Definitely not. It is highly dangerous and a breach of WH&S laws to lift personnel in a cage that is not specifically designed and certified as a forklift work platform (safety cage or man cage).

Forklift goods cage capacities vary, but standard goods cages typically hold between 1000kg and 1500kg. A forklift goods cage capacity can be confirmed by checking the manufacturer’s specification plate attached to the cage.

In Australia, forklift goods cages must comply with Australian Standard AS 2359.1 Powered industrial trucks.
